One of the most significant events in the history of tamang culture relations was the interdiction of Buddhism to Tibet in the second century of present era. The origin of the tamang is not exactly known. They may have broken away from the western and southern of Tibet. Tamang from one of the major Tibet to-burman speaking communities in Nepal. It is said that originally they were collectively called 'Bhote'; meaning Tibetan and that later on the term "TAMANG" was attached to them because they were horse traders 'TA' Tibetan means "Horse”, ‘MAN' means "Trader". Tamang has remained and it is all better because the term 'Bhote' has come to be a highly objectional and derogatory term to most Nepalese.
Now day’s tamang are scatted all over the world. Although the majority of tamang settlements are found in Nepal. Similarly, in the east majority of tamang settlement are found in Bagmati Zone. Just outside of the hill surrounding Kathmandu valley and Narayani Zone. Some scatted sattlement are found even as west Bengal in Darjeeling area.
Tamang prefer the higher dryer elevations for living and farming generally between 1700m and 5000 above sea level. In some cases they live even higher but they are also found out of their tradition high habitant in low terai plans or in Rapti valley.
